I did a lot of years as a full time captain. I would live on yachts and take them wherever the owner or charterers wanted to go. It paid pretty good and I had no expenses because I ate the food aboard, wore my uniforms, and missed every holiday, birthday, wedding, and family event.
I was anchored near a beautiful Island in the Caribbean, on Christmas Eve, placing a very expensive and therefore very short call to my sister to wish her a merry Christmas when I decided that I wanted to stop missing my family and start a land-based business.
It’s tough for companies to know what a “yacht captain’s” usable skills are when not aboard a yacht, but I know that people management, complex logistics, budgeting, extreme customer service, are just a few of the skills that easily translate to any business…and yet, it was hard to find a job….
“Sorry, I don’t have cash-register experience, but it’s just a touch-screen computer hooked into a network, I can definitely work with those.”
Anyway, I knew that from the first time I tried to be land-based that working for someone else would limit what I could do, and I was tired of somebody else making money off my sister. I wanted to be the one making money off her genious! So we started a hair salon together.
It’s a boutique salon in Baltimore, just a few blocks from the port, and we specialize in Curly Hair.
I named it DryLand… get it??
DryLand Salon is a place of Salvation. When you’ve been at sea for days and you smell that first waft of land, you feel lifted and energized.
I still don’t know much about hair, which is good because it means that I don’t get in the way of my employees that do. I never knew much about watermaker membranes either, that’s what hiring engineers is for.
Fast forward 10 years, and the Salon is doing great! People come from really far away to get their hair done by my sister and our brilliant staff, but we wanted more for our clients. Curly clients would need different products for different times of the year or need different products once they started coloring their hair. We spent 5 YEARS with labs testing and developing a product that could work with all curl types and be adjustable to the style you want on any day!

I’m so proud of how well it works, the reviews from clients in the salon, the gorgeous design of the bottle, all of it is so thrilling, and gets me closer to the life where I can spend more time on the water reminding folks that boats are fun. Plus I can do it with great hair!
